The Short Answer: Yes, in 95% of Cases.
While it is tempting to reuse your old underlay to cut down on costs, it is almost always a false economy. Underlay behaves like the shock absorber in your car. By the time your old carpet is worn out, the underlay underneath has already lost its elasticity, flattened, and accumulated years of dust, dirt, and pet dander.
Why Old Underlay Cannot Be Reused:
- Uneven Wear: Old underlay will have flattened more heavily in high-traffic pathways (like hallways or the center of the living room) compared to corners. Reusing it will cause your brand-new carpet to wear unevenly and look prematurely aged.
- Voiding Your Warranty: Most premium carpet manufacturers (including wool twist and luxury pile brands) explicitly state that their wear warranties are only valid if the carpet is fitted over a brand-new, suitable underlay.
- Dust and Hygeine: Over 10-15 years, underlay crumbles and collects dust mites, moisture, and odors. Removing it gives your subfloor a clean slate.
What Are the Benefits of a New Underlay?
Investing in a quality new underlay offers substantial long-term returns in comfort, energy efficiency, and floor longevity:
Underlay absorbs the impact of foot traffic, preventing the carpet fibers from crushing directly against the hard concrete or plywood subfloor.
Underlays carry a TOG rating. Thick polyurethane (PU) foam underlay acts as an extra layer of floor insulation, keeping drafty rooms warm.
Essential for upstairs bedrooms and apartments. A dense underlay absorbs sound transmission, dampening footsteps and impact noise.
Choosing the Thickness: 8mm vs. 10mm
We carry two primary grades of underlay in our mobile showroom:
| Specification | Standard 8mm PU Foam | Premium 10mm Cloud Nine |
|---|---|---|
| Best For | Budget-friendly, rental homes, stairs | Living rooms, main bedrooms, luxury feel |
| Foot Feel | Firm & supportive | Plush, thick, bounce-back cushion |
| TOG (Insulation) | approx. 2.0 TOG | approx. 2.8+ TOG (high insulation) |
| Sound Absorption | approx. 32 dB | approx. 39+ dB (superior acoustic block) |
Our Recommendation:
For staircases and high-use hallways, a slightly firmer underlay (like our Standard 8mm) provides excellent stability and prevents carpet shifting. For living rooms and bedrooms where comfort and insulation are high priorities, our Premium 10mm Cloud Nine underlay offers an unmatched, luxury walking experience.
