Victorian Staircase Runner — Streatham, SW16
A complete stair carpet replacement on a 19th-century Victorian staircase with turned spindles and curved balustrade, transforming a worn, tired hallway into an elegant focal point.
01 The Challenge
The original carpet had been in place for over 15 years and was heavily worn on the nosings. The staircase had a curved bullnose bottom step — one of the trickiest details in carpet fitting — and the pine balustrade had delicate spindles that needed to be worked around without damage.
02 Our Approach
Paul fitted a premium grey loop-pile carpet with a quality 10mm Cloud Nine underlay for noise reduction and underfoot comfort. Each tread and riser was hand-cut and fitted individually to follow the curve of the bullnose step. Metal rods and carpet grippers were installed on every step to British BS 5442 standards.
03 The Result
The finished staircase became the centrepiece of the hallway. The homeowner commented that the install was "neater than anything they had seen before." The entire job — removal, fitting, and cleanup — was completed in a single day.
