Expert Carpet & LVT Advice
Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about subfloor prep, underlays, power stretching, LVT expansion gaps, and how to prepare for your flooring installation.
General Preparation
Proper room preparation ensures a smooth and fast installation. We recommend:
* Clear the area: Remove all furniture, breakables, toys, and clutter from the rooms being fitted.
* Clear pathways: Ensure there is a safe, unobstructed path from our mobile showroom van to the installation rooms.
* Subfloor preparation: Make sure the subfloor is clean and swept. If you are handling the removal of the old floor yourself, ensure all old staples, tacks, and glue residue are removed.
Most single-room installations (carpet or sheet vinyl) take half a day to a full day to complete. Multi-room projects or complex Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) layouts (such as herringbone patterns) generally take 1 to 2 days. We will always specify the expected duration in your quote.
While you do not need to sit in the room during the entire fitting process, we require you to be present at the start of the job to verify details, and at the end of the job to conduct a final walkthrough together and sign off on our workmanship.
Carpet Fitting
In 95% of cases, yes. Underlay acts as a shock absorber, protecting the carpet pile from wearing against the hard subfloor. A new underlay can double the lifespan of your carpet, improve foot comfort, add heat insulation, and reduce noise transmission. We offer high-quality standard 8mm underlays or premium 10mm Cloud Nine underlays with our estimates.
Power stretching uses a mechanical lever system to stretch the carpet tight and anchor it to the gripper rods. British standards require power stretching for carpet fitting. Many cheap fitters only use a hand knee-kicker, which does not provide enough tension. Over time, poorly stretched carpets will ripple, buckle, and wear prematurely. We strictly power stretch every carpet we fit.
This is a normal characteristic called shading or pile reversal. When carpet fibers are brushed or walked on in different directions, they reflect light differently, causing dark and light patches. Vacuuming in a single direction will temporarily uniform the pile, and the fibers will settle over time.
Vinyl & LVT Flooring
Yes! Both Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) and cushioned sheet vinyl are highly water-resistant and waterproof, making them ideal for high-humidity areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. However, concrete subfloors must be fully tested for moisture levels first to prevent glue failure.
LVT planks expand and contract slightly with fluctuations in temperature and room humidity. We maintain a small expansion gap (typically 5mm to 8mm) around the perimeter of the walls. This gap is covered by your skirting boards or color-matched scotia beading. Skipping this gap can cause LVT planks to buckle and lift.
Yes. LVT planks should be stored flat in the room of installation for at least 24 to 48 hours prior to fitting. This allows the material to adjust to the room's normal humidity and temperature, ensuring click-joints lock tightly and remain flat.
Yes, but you should take precautions. We recommend using protective cups or felt pads under heavy legs. When moving heavy appliances (like washing machines or fridges) over vinyl, always use sliders or sheets of hardboard to prevent scratching, scuffing, or tearing the vinyl.
