Professional Carpet Fitting & Stretching
Expert supply-and-fit or professional labor-only installation. We stretch every carpet using mechanical power stretchers to BS 5325 standards, guaranteeing a ripple-free finish.
Direct Trade Carpet Craftsmanship & Expert Fitting
Welcome to the dedicated carpet fitting service run personally by Paul, an independent floor specialist serving homeowners and landlords throughout South London and Surrey. Finding a reliable, experienced fitter who does not rely on third-party subcontractors or directory matching systems can be challenging. By choosing me, you secure a direct point of contact for your entire project. I personally measure, inspect, prepare, and fit every carpet, delivering high-end retail quality at competitive trade rates.
Whether you need a full supply-and-fit service utilizing my mobile sample showroom or have already purchased your carpet online (from Tapi, John Lewis, or elsewhere) and require a professional labor-only installation, I accommodate your needs. My focus is on technical precision: stretching backing materials to their correct structural tension, template-fitting stair runners on winders, and ensuring subfloors are completely quiet and secure.
Why Mechanical Power Stretching (BS 5325) is Essential
Many standard carpet fitters use only a hand-kicker to tap the carpet into place. While this is fast, it fails to stretch the carpet backing to its required tension. Within 6 to 12 months, normal foot traffic will cause the carpet to loosen, resulting in unsightly ripples, waves, and premature backing wear.
Under British Standard BS 5325 (the code of practice for installation of textile floor coverings), carpets must be stretched using a mechanical lever power stretcher. This tool grips the carpet across its entire width, stretching it to absolute tension before it is anchored to heavy-duty dual-grip gripper tack rods. This keeps your carpet perfectly flat, taut, and structured for its entire lifespan.
I use a mechanical lever power stretcher for every single carpet installation. This grips the carpet across its entire width, stretching it to absolute tension before it is anchored to heavy-duty dual-grip gripper tack rods. This keeps your carpet perfectly flat, taut, and structured for its entire lifespan.

Selecting the Right Carpet Materials & Weaves
Choosing the correct carpet involves balancing visual preferences, comfort, and wear resistance. In my mobile sample showroom, I carry a wide range of carpet types, which I bring directly to your driveway:
80/20 Wool Blends: Made of 80% natural wool and 20% synthetic nylon, these carpets offer the perfect balance of luxury and durability. Wool loops and twists are naturally soil-resistant, hold their shape exceptionally well under heavy foot traffic, and provide superior thermal and acoustic insulation. They are highly recommended for living rooms, bedrooms, and staircases.
Polypropylene Easy-Clean Saxonies: These bleach-cleanable synthetic carpets are ideal for busy family homes, rental properties, and households with pets. They resist stains, are highly affordable, and offer a soft, luxurious feel underfoot.
Felt-Back Carpets: A cost-effective option for low-traffic areas or budget-conscious projects. While they can be laid directly over subfloors, we always recommend pairing them with a quality underlay to ensure comfort and extend their lifespan.
Acoustic & Thermal Underlay: The Shock Absorber
Many homeowners overlook underlay, but it is actually the most important part of your carpet installation. Underlay acts as a shock absorber, absorbing foot impact and protecting the carpet pile from grinding against the hard subfloor. A high-quality underlay can extend the lifespan of your carpet by up to 50%, while significantly improving heat retention and reducing impact noise between floors.
We supply and fit premium Cloud Nine PU underlays in three thickness grades to meet your specific requirements:
- 8mm PU Underlay: A slim, firm option ideal for narrow stairs and budget-friendly bedroom refreshes.
- 9mm Super High Density PU Underlay: A balanced, durable option offering great foot cushioning and support for busy hallways and living spaces.
- 11mm Super High Density PU Underlay: Our top-tier option delivering maximum luxury, thermal insulation, and sound insulation (often required to comply with strict leasehold flat covenants).
Subfloor Preparation & Joist Stabilization
A premium carpet cannot perform properly if laid over a poorly prepared subfloor. Suspended timber floorboards, common in Victorian, Edwardian, and 1930s homes across South London and Surrey, are prone to warping, creaking, and flexing. Before laying any underlay, we inspect the timber subfloor, drive countersunk wood screws into loose boards to secure them to the joists, and eliminate squeaks.
If the floorboards are highly uneven or drafty, we install a 6mm plywood overlay to create a perfectly smooth, solid base. For concrete subfloors, we test for relative humidity (RH) to ensure the base is completely dry and apply latex self-levelling compounds to smooth out pits and ridges.

Carpet Fitting FAQs
Do I need to replace my underlay when fitting new carpet?
In 95% of cases, yes. Underlay acts as a shock absorber. It absorbs foot impact, protecting the carpet backing from grinding against timber boards or concrete. Reusing old, crushed underlay voids most carpet wear warranties and leads to premature carpet wear.
Can you fit a carpet runner on a winding staircase?
Yes! Winding staircase runners are one of our core specialties. We template and hand-fold the winder steps to ensure the stripe or pattern aligns perfectly with the turns and remains tight underfoot, creating a clean finish.
What is power stretching and why is it used?
Power stretching uses a mechanical lever system to stretch the carpet backing to its correct structural tension. Hand-kickers alone do not provide enough force, causing carpets to loosen, buckle, and develop ripples within months of installation.
How do you handle doors that drag on the new carpet?
If your new carpet and underlay are thicker than your previous flooring, the doors may drag. Paul uses a specialized door-trimming saw to trim the bottom of the wood doors cleanly on-site, ensuring they swing freely without scraping.
Do you offer a labor-only service if I buy my own carpet?
Absolutely! We offer a professional labor-only installation service. If you have already purchased your carpet, underlay, or grippers from a retailer or online, we will fit them to the highest standards.
Do you help move heavy furniture?
Yes, Paul personally helps move standard heavy furniture (such as beds, wardrobes, and sofas) on fitting day. We only ask that you clear fragile items, breakables, and small clutter before we arrive.
Is carpet suitable for leasehold flats with noise covenants?
Yes, carpet is the best acoustic barrier for leaseholds. When paired with our 11mm Super High Density underlay, it absorbs footstep impact and minimizes sound transmission, helping you comply with leasehold covenants.
