01 The Challenge

The original carpet had been in place for over 15 years and was heavily worn on the nosings. The staircase had a curved bullnose bottom step — one of the trickiest details in carpet fitting — and the pine balustrade had delicate spindles that needed to be worked around without damage.

02 Our Approach

Paul fitted a premium grey loop-pile carpet with a quality 10mm Cloud Nine underlay for noise reduction and underfoot comfort. Each tread and riser was hand-cut and fitted individually to follow the curve of the bullnose step. Metal rods and carpet grippers were installed on every step to British BS 5325 standards.

03 The Result

The finished staircase became the centrepiece of the hallway. The homeowner commented that the install was "neater than anything they had seen before." The entire job — removal, fitting, and cleanup — was completed in a single day.

The hall exceeded 300m² across two levels including a raised stage with complex edge details. The project required precise planning to minimise disruption to the community. Time was critical — the hall was needed for a Sunday service 48 hours after work began.

Both floors were completed within the 48-hour window. The dark grey carpet dramatically improved the room's acoustics and gave the hall a smart, professional appearance. The community voted it the best renovation the hall had seen in 30 years. (Note: While this specific church hall project was a large commercial installation, Paul specializes primarily in domestic residential flooring.)

01 The Challenge

The existing ceramic tiles were uneven and several were cracked. The subfloor had a 12mm height difference between the kitchen and hallway, requiring a self-levelling compound application before installation could begin. The kitchen island also posed a complex cutting challenge with curved toe-kick details.

02 Our Approach

Paul used a two-part self-levelling compound to bring the subfloor within 3mm tolerance across the full area — the industry standard for floating LVT. A click-lock oak-effect LVT plank system was chosen for its ability to cope with the underfloor heating system and kitchen moisture levels. All cuts around the island were templated and hand-scribed for a seamless fit.

03 The Result

The continuous oak-effect floor unified all three spaces, making the property feel significantly larger and brighter. The homeowners specifically requested Paul return to fit the upstairs bedrooms after seeing the finished result.

The existing carpet and underlay throughout the property had reached the end of their life — flattened pile, worn patches on the stairs and landing, and underlay that had lost its bounce. With six rooms plus a full staircase to cover, the job needed careful sequencing so freshly fitted rooms weren't walked over while work continued elsewhere in the house.

02 Our Approach

The old carpet and underlay were uplifted room by room down to the bare floorboards, with new gripper rods fitted around every edge. New underlay was cut and fitted ahead of the carpet in each room, and new Abingdon Stainfree Captivation twist-pile carpet was power-stretched into place across both lounges, all four bedrooms, the staircase and the landing.

03 The Result

The whole property now has a consistent, freshly fitted twist-pile carpet from the lounges through to the top-floor bedrooms, with the stairs and landing tying the whole scheme together. The Stainfree Captivation range gives the homeowner a bleach-cleanable, stain-resistant carpet backed by a 10-year wear warranty.

Both upstairs bedrooms had laminate flooring, and the scotia had been painted while it was fixed to the skirting boards. The client wanted to keep it, so the laminate had to come up without disturbing the scotia, and the new carpet had to be tucked in around the perimeter instead.

02 Our Approach

The laminate panels were lifted carefully, then the old carpet and underlay on the stairs, landing and lounge were uplifted and disposed of. The floor was depinned to leave a clean subfloor for new Cloud 9 underlay, gold door bars were fitted to every doorway, and the new carpet went in throughout.

03 The Result

The lounge, both bedrooms, stairs and landing now have one matching Leather-coloured twist pile carpet, with the client's painted scotia untouched. We also helped move the furniture back into place in every room we worked in.
